Course Description: This course places quantitative skills and reasoning in the context of experiences that students will be likely to encounter. It emphasizes processing information in context from a variety of representations, understanding of both the information and the processing, and understanding which conclusions can be reasonably determined. Topics covered include sets and set operations, logic, basic probability, data analysis, linear models, quadratic models, and exponential and logarithmic models.


Prerequisites: Satisfactory placement scores/MATH 0097

Required Materials:  Thinking Mathematically, Fifth Edition, Blitzer  (Course code: shane70232)

Calculator Requirement:  Each student taking this course needs access to a scientific calculator.   Students will use their calculator while participating in class, taking exams, and completing homework exercises.   Please note that sharing calculators during graded assignments is not permitted.  Other electronic devices may not be used during exams or quizzes — usage of such devices will result in an automatic F on the exam or quiz.

Course Content:  Chapters 6 – 8, 10, 1 – 3, 11

Grading Policies:

  • Exams
  • Four exams and a comprehensive final exam will be given during the semester. All exams and the final will count 100 points each.
  • There will be no make-up tests.
  • If a student’s final exam grade is higher than any test grades, the final exam grade will replace the lowest test grade. 
  • Homework
    • Homework will be due every at the beginning of class meeting.  It will be worth a total of 50 points.
    • Show steps or no credit will be given. 
    • There will be allowances for one late homework assignment over the course of the semester.

The following grading scale will apply:                                      A - 90%-100%

                                                                                             B - 80%-90%

                                                                                             C - 70%-80%

                                                                                             D - 60%-70%

                                                                                             F - less than 60%   

Note: Please keep a copy of all graded tests, homework and all other relevant documents from the course until the end of the semester. 

Class Attendance & Make-up Exams:        

  • Students are expected to attend each and every scheduled class session. Since lectures begin promptly at the scheduled time, students are encouraged to avoid arriving late to class.  Attendance will be reflected in students’ grades through homework grades.
  • Students absent for a class will not be allowed to turn in late homework unless they contact the instructor BEFORE the missed class via email AND the instructor gives the student permission.  Students must make arrangements PRIOR to the scheduled class. 
  • There will be no make-up exams.  If a student needs to miss an exam, they may discuss with the instructor the possibility of taking it BEFORE the exam date.  No exams will be administrated after their given date, and students who do not show up will receive a zero on the exam.
  • If a student needs to leave early on a given day, they need to inform the instructor before the class begins.

An important note for students enrolled in both MATH 1001 and MLCS 0099c:  Students enrolled in both MATH 1001 and MLCS 0099c are expected to attend each and every class session of both courses.   After three absences in the MLCS 0099c co-requisite course, students may be referred to the dean of Academic Success and eLearning.  After three absences in the MATH 1001 course, students may be referred to the dean of Mathematics.  In either case, after consulting with the appropriate academic dean, students may be withdrawn from their MATH 1001 course.”Note: This is a tentative schedule and the instructor reserves the prerogative of altering the above plans as circumstances dictate.

Academic Policies:  Students who simply quit attending class without officially withdrawing will receive a grade of F% in the class.

Early Warning Program:  Georgia Highlands College requires that all faculty members report their students' progress throughout the course of the semester as part of the institution-wide Early Warning Program (EWP).  The objective of the program is to support academic success by reviewing early indicators of satisfactory student progress.  In accordance with EWP, faculty members provide the Registrar's Office with academic reports of each student enrolled in their course(s) at checkpoints staggered throughout the semester.  The following success factors are reported at their corresponding checkpoint:

  • Week 2: Notification of Non-attendance
  • Week 6: Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory Progress

Last Day to Withdraw without Academic Penalty: October 23

  • Withdrawals after this date are subject to approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and will be issued only in cases of extreme emergency or hardship.

Student Learning Outcomes:  Students completing this course should satisfy the following goal and learning outcomes:

  • Students will be able to use appropriate technology to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding.
  • Students will be able to interpret a real-life function.

Academic Dishonesty:  Cheating will not be tolerated in this class.  If the instructor suspects a student of cheating, the instructor will notify the student of the allegations outside of class.  Then, the allegations will be referred to the Director of Student Life for appropriate action.  The procedures and penalties implemented both by the instructor and the Director of Student Life shall be in accordance with the college's Academic Integrity Policy, online at:

Special Note to Students Receiving Financial Aid:  This message applies only to students receiving financial aid:  Federal regulations state that if a student did not attend classes and received failing grades, then the grades were not earned and financial aid needs to be reduced accordingly.  Please be advised that any student receiving a 0.00 GPA will be required to prove that the 0.00 GPA was earned by attending classes or completing requirements for each classStudents who have earned at least one passing grade for the semester will not be affected by this regulation.  If a student has properly withdrawn from all classes, the student’s financial aid should be adjusted from the time they signed the withdrawal form. 

Early Grades Statement:  GHC offers a variety of part-of-term classes to allow our students to have flexible schedules.  However, there are only three Semesters each year: Spring, Summer and Fall.  It is only at the end of each Semester that grades are rolled to academic history and available on the official transcript.  After each part-of-term, as soon as Instructors have entered grades, they may be viewed online by logging into the SCORE (  Transcripts may also be request at any time by logging into the SCORE.  Prior to the end of term, should a student need an early grade letter sent to another institution they may complete the request form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office for processing (  Please contact the Registrar’s Office at if you need any assistance.
