Basic Terms

Course management tool - a software product that is used to facilitate and enhance classroom instruction. It is composed of various tools that can include discussion groups, classroom based content (PowerPoint slides, documents, etc), chat rooms, whiteboards, assignments, course calendar, classroom-based email, syllabus and assessments. Each instructor determines what set of tools are used for a given class.

Digital audio recorder - a simple recording device that records class lectures in a digital format for accessibility at a later time.

DVD - also known as college by DVD- a series of DVD’s that contain course lectures. The series is checked out by the students from the library. Students view the DVD’s instead of attending classes.

DVD/Hybrid - Students meet in a classroom environment for discussion of materials and obtain lecture materials from a DVD for the remaining day.

GA View Vista - the University System of Georgia (USG) supported Learning Management System (LMS) which is used by all of USG's 35 institutions. The LMS allows 24/7 internet access to course content, chat, discussions, quizzes, and much more. Georgia VIEW Vista was formally called WebCT Vista, but the name has been changed to avoid confusion with Microsoft's new operating system called Vista. Eventually, the word Vista will be dropped and Georgia VIEW Vista will simply become Georgia VIEW.

GHTV Course - Course lectures are made available to students via GHTV. Courses are cablecast live during the scheduled time as outlined in the academic schedule and replayed at various times during the week. Students can choose to view the classes on television or attend the live recording.

GHTV - Georgia Highlands Television - offers a full service studio for recording courses or segments of courses. The channel provides educational programming to Comcast subscribers in the Greater Rome area.

Hybrid - a course that meets with students in a traditional classroom environment one day per week and relies on a form of distance to provide information to students as a substitute for the remaining classroom day

iTunes U - a part of the iTunes Store featuring course lectures that have been compressed and made available through Apple’s iTunes feature. Materials can contain audio and or video and can be accessed with an iPod, iPhone, Mac or PC.

Podcast - a series of audio or video digital-media files which is distributed over the Internet by syndicated download, through Web feeds, to portable media players and personal computers. Though the same content may also be made available by direct download or streaming, a podcast is distinguished from other digital-media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added.

Podcast Producer - software that allows you to create and publish podcasts.

Vodcast - a video podcast or vidcast is a term used for the online delivery of video on demand video clip content. The term is an evolution specialized for video, coming from the generally audio-based podcast and referring to the distribution of video.
