Welcome to the Division of Social Sciences program of study in Sociology.  Georgia Highlands College offers an Associate of Arts degree in Sociology with a broad liberal arts background based on an academic perspective. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, commonly referred to as SACS

At Georgia Highlands College, the study of Sociology offers a number of options for the student.  We primarily focus on courses that provide one with a broad overview of Sociology.  We also provide courses in more specialized topics such as Marriage and Family, Introduction to Human Services, and Social Problems.

Our course of study not only emphasizes content knowledge, but also focuses on the development of sociological theories and critical thinking skills that a student can take with him or her in various situations throughout a lifetime

Sociology provides an excellent preparation for careers in education, social work, politics, health care, child development, international studies, criminal justice, and a number of other careers. Because of the wide-ranging applicability of work of sociologists, there are a number of different degrees one could pursue.  An Associate’s degree generally prepares you for further academic work and is a great way to be introduced to the discipline.  A Bachelor’s degree will expand the knowledge base and deepen the understanding of sociological theories and application.  Students and graduates of Georgia Highlands can go on to traditional four-year colleges and universities to obtain their baccalaureate degrees.
