USG Faculty and Staff Resources website.
This site is designed to be a centralized location identifying resources available to all USG faculty and staff. Within this site, you will find resources provided by the various office from within the University System Office and from the 35 institutions across the USG. You can also see links to all Teaching and Learning sites for each USG institution. A listing of all statewide conferences is also available.
MERLOT, Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching, is a high quality collection of interactive learning materials, assignments, reviews, and people. MERLOT is also a national network of online discipline communities that will be selecting and peer-reviewing learning materials in their specific disciplines. MERLOT serves as a national gateway to web-based peer-reviewed learning materials.
Most faculty do not have the time to develop electronic content; nor are they interested in adopting a complete pre-packaged course. MERLOT provides them a way of easily and cheaply incorporating material into theircourse and syllabus. MERLOT may also eventually provide faculty a more systematic way of documenting their contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Most web search engines (e.g. Yahoo) can lead you to sites on a particular topic, but rarely to the depth of information teachers and scholars need. MERLOT collects web-based materials from selected disciplines, evaluates them, and attaches assignments, reviews, and other information necessary to integrate them successfully into faculty curricula. By searching through MERLOT, faculty members can easily identify materials that are appropriate for them to assign in their courses.
USG iTunes U. A variety of conference proceedings, strategic plans and other materials developed within the University system can be viewed in iTunes (on a Mac or Wintel PC). Some of these sessions may take some time to download. They then can be viewed on your computer or loaded onto an iPod device.
Films on Demand Films On Demand is a web-based digital video library that allows you to view streaming videos anytime, anywhere, 24/7! Choose from more than 6,500 educational titles in dozens of subject areas. Special features allow faculty to easily share playlists with students via email or incorporate them into their online learning environment.
Films on Demand is managed by Films Media Group, and includes videos from Films for the Humanities and Sciences, Cambridge Educational, Meridian Education, and Shopware.
You and your students can access Films on Demand through GALILEO at http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?link=fils-flo1 (note that if you are not on a GHC campus, you will be asked for the current GALILEO password, then you will be asked for your GHC Network username & password).

Overwhelmed by the options on VISTA? Start out by using only a few of the functions: syllabus, calendar with assignments each date, and gradebook.
2. “Audience friendly” Power Points
Avoid “Death by PowerPoint” by following these simple guidelines:
a. more pictures, less words: each slide should have no more than 6 lines of text, 6 words per line
b. Use simple colors and graphics for readability
c. Make partial slideshows available on VISTA if you have a note-heavy course… have the students “fill in the blanks”
3. Videos for class discussion

b. Personal video library: keep a “video journal” so that when you watch movies for fun, you can take notes of which scenes would be applicable to the concepts you discuss in class! You can find great deals on used DVDs from amazon.com.
c. Search YouTube and Hulu.com for popular culture videos

a. Manage your blogs- streamlines your daily Internet reading
b. Don’t follow any blogs or read online newspapers yet? Try the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and AJC.com for starters!

a. Scholarly articles relating to your field of study will magically appear in your inbox!
b. Can also set up searches for teaching tools
6. Twitter: www.twitter.com
a. Keep students in the loop by sending reminders that can go directly to their cell phones like a text message
b. For students: plenty of activities that can center around this tool, such as Tweeting a one-sentence summary of what they learned, participating in an online discussion, or even “following” updates on current events or topics you’re discussing in class!
c. For educators: “follow” other experts in your field to stay updated on trends, new research, etc
7. Prezi – www.prezi.com
a. See examples on the website; free sign-up for educators
b. Different presentation format than PowerPoint
c. Good for discussions that are non-linear/hard to put into bullet points
d. Allows easy incorporation of graphics, movement

a. Record your in-class lectures and share them online for students to download
b. Helpful if you have an online class!
a. Good for educators hoping to learn more about a subject
b. Good for students/student projects… have them listen to a podcast about a relevant topic and write a paper about it OR have them review some of the materials in an online course for free!
10.Create a YouTube channel
a. Record and upload your presentations or lectures to YouTube and share with colleagues in your discipline. NOTE: if you use student work, make sure to have and keep on file their written permission before uploading to the web!
Doodle "The world’s leading online scheduling service, Doodle takes the pain out of finding the right date and time for a group of people to meet and makes scheduling virtually effortless. The basic service is a free online coordination tool which requires neither registration nor software installation."
Polleverywhere "On the surface, Poll Everywhere is a simple text message voting application that works well for live audiences. People vote by sending text messages (or using Twitter) to options displayed on-screen. The poll that is embedded within the presentation or web page will update in real time. Advanced uses include texting comments to a presentation, texting questions to a presenter, web voting, and SMS interactivity in print, radio, and TV."
Jing Take a screenshot or capture what you see on your monitor (including motion) and save it as a swf file (Flash). You are limited to 5 minutes of video capture. Jing makes it very easy to grab screenshots and videos straight from your PC, and then save them or share them on the Web. Helpful Software. Southern Polytechnic State University has very useful site with "How-To" movies and pdfs of what they call "Helpful Software." Included are How-To's about the following: Camtasia, Impatica, Respondus, Turnitin, Podcasting, Digital Media.
