**Placement Testing**

**First-Time Freshmen**

First-time freshmen must take placement tests in English, Reading, and Math according to the following rules.

**Reading**

Students must test if they have

- SAT Reading below 24, SAT Verbal below 430, ACT Verbal below 17
- Lack of standardized test scores

Required course:

- COMPASS score 76 or below: ENGL 0989

**English**

Students must test if they have

- SAT Reading 26, SAT Verbal below 480, ACT Verbal below 20
- Lack of standardized test scores

Required course(s):

- COMPASS score 44 or below: ENGL 0989
- COMPASS score between 45 to 59: ENGL 0999 with ENGL 1101

**Math**

Students must test if they have

- SAT Math (since March 2016) below 480, SAT Math (before March 2016) below 440, ACT Math below 18
- Lack of standardized test scores

Required course(s):

SAT and ACT scores can only be used for 7 years after the date of testing.

- COMPASS score 31 or below: MATH 0987 or MATH 0989, depending on path
- COMPASS score between 32 and 39: MATH 0997 with MATH 1001 or MATH 0989 with MATH 1111, depending on path

**Transfer Students and Re-Admits**

Transfer students must take placement tests in English, Reading, and Math **unless** the following conditions are met.

- Successful exit from Learning Support at a USG institution satisfies LS requirements at GHC, as long as this is shown on the student’s official transcript.
- Transfer credit that is accepted by the GHC registrar as equivalent to ENGL 1101 or higher satisfies English LS requirements
- Transfer credit that is accepted by the GHC registrar as equivalent to a credit-level ENGL, PSYC, SOCI, HIST, or POLS course satisfies Reading LS requirements
- Transfer credit that is accepted by the GHC registrar as equivalent to credit-level Math (MATH 1111 or course for which it is a prerequisite, MATH 1101, and MATH 1001) satisfies Math LS requirements. The old USG course MATH 105 satisfies Math LS requirements. The old courses MATH 103 and 108 do not.
- A passing COMPASS score from any accredited institution satisfies LS requirements in the area of the score. Passing COMPASS scores never expire.
- A passing CPE score from any USG institution or COC-accredited DTAE technical school satisfies LS requirements in the area of the score. Passing CPE scores never expire.
- SAT or ACT scores that would exempt the student from testing as described in the section on “First-Time Freshmen” above.

A failing score on a placement test expires after one year and the student takes the placement test again in the area of the failing score.

Although GHC accepts COMPASS and CPE scores from other institutions, different colleges have different criterion scores for passing within a range established by the Georgia Board of Regents. A student’s score must meet the GHC standards for passing in order to satisfy LS requirements at GHC.

Transfer students who have CPC deficiencies in English or Math must take placement tests on entrance to GHC **unless** the following conditions are met.

- Transfer credit that is accepted by the GHC registrar as equivalent to ENGL 1101 or higher satisfies English CPC requirements
- Transfer credit that is accepted by the GHC registrar as equivalent to credit-level Math (MATH 1111 or course for which it is a prerequisite, MATH 1101, and MATH 1001) satisfies Math CPC requirements.
- A passing COMPASS score from any accredited institution satisfies CPC requirements in the area of the score.
- SAT or ACT scores that would exempt the student from English and Math testing as described in the section on “First-Time Freshmen” above also satisfy CPC in English and Math respectively.

**Registering for Learning Support Courses**

Student who place in Learning Support courses must register with the assistance of an advisor due to holds placed on the student record that prevent them from registering via the web.

In every term of attendance, students must first register for all required Learning Support courses before being allowed to register for other courses.

**FCST 1010 Requirement**

Students entering the college with any Learning Support requirement must take The College Experience (FCST 1010) the first semester of enrollment. Students coming into the college with 12 or more transfer credit hours are exempt from this rule.

**The Eighteen-Hour Rule**

Students who have accumulated 18 or more credit hours and have not successfully completed their Foundations Course(s) may only register for 2 classes each semester, including the required Foundations Course(s).

**The Thirty-Hour Rule**

Students who have accumulated 30 or more credit hours and have not successfully completed one Gateway Course may only register for up to 8 credit hours each semester, including any required Gateway and co-requisite courses. Students who have accumulated 30 or more credit hours and have not successfully completed either Gateway Course may only register for the required Gateway and co-requisite courses.

**Attempts and Suspension**

If a student fails ENGL 0989 two times, the student is suspended from institutions in the USG for one year.

If a student fails two semesters of MATH 0987or MATH 0989 or one semester each of the two course, the student is suspended from institutions in the USG for one year.

No appeals for additional attempts will be permitted except for those who have qualifying disabilities documented with GHC's Student Support Services office.

After a one-year Learning Support suspension, GHC may readmit a suspended student or another USG institution may admit the student.

**Withdrawing from Learning Support Courses**

Students required to register for co-requisite courses (ENGL 0999, MATH 0997 or MATH 0999) along with associated credit courses (ENGL 1101, MATH 1001 or MATH 1111) may only withdraw from both courses. Withdrawal from only one of the two courses, either the co-requisite course or the credit course, is not permitted.

A Learning Support class from which a student withdraws with a grade of “W” does not count as an attempt for purposes of suspension from the University System of Georgia. A Learning Support class from which a student withdraws with a grade of “WF” **does** count as an attempt.
