MATH 0099

Some questions and answers for students

Why did I have to take this class?

Students who score between 32 and 39 on the COMPASS Placement Test are required to take this course in preparation for college-level mathematics. It is also the follow-up course for those who have completed Math 0097. This class is designed to improve your skills in intermediate algebra.

What will this course do for me?

It will help you improve your math skills in such areas as rational and radical expressions, linear equations, and the graphing of equations. It will prepare you for the COMPASS Exit test and future credit-level courses in mathematics.

How many of these non-credit math courses must I take?

Students who place into MATH 0099 must complete only this course and score a 40 or above on the COMPASS Exit test. Some students are required to complete Math 0097 before taking this course. Others place directly into Math 0099 and can exit to credit-level work from this course.

What if I don't pass MATH 0099?

You will be required to repeat the course. State regulations require that you complete any academic support work within three semesters (see information below). Failure to pass the class or to pass the COMPASS Exit test will place you back into Math 0099.

How long do I have to complete my MATH 0097 AND MATH 0099?

You have three (3) semesters to complete ALL required academic support math courses. This means that both MATH 0097 and MATH 0099 must be successfully completed within three (3) semesters. Otherwise, state regulations require that be dismissed from college. If you have qualifying disability paperwork from the disability office at your campus, you may be eligible for additional attempts. See the disability specialist at your site for more information.

When do I take the COMPASS Exit test?

The COMPASS Exit test is always given near the end of the term and your instructor will tell you the test schedule. It is your responsibility to get to the test and to bring a photo ID for test entry.

What courses are open for me while I am in MATH 0099?

You are prohibited from taking any higher level math courses until you have successfully completed Math 0099 and the COMPASS Exit test. Other academic courses may be available to you depending upon your academic support requirements in other areas. Talk with your academic advisor for information on what is available for you.

Does this count in my grade point average (GPA)?

NO. Learning Support courses do not count in your GPA. However, they DO show on your transcript and they MAY AFFECT your eligibility for financial aid from either HOPE or Pell Grants.
