Interpreting services are provided to qualified Georgia Highlands College deaf students for any college sponsored event including, but not limited to, classes, concerts, plays, seminars, departmental meetings, and extracurricular events.  Services will be provided according to the following criteria and depend upon interpreter availability.


Classroom Interpreting

Upon finalization of class schedules, students should complete and submit to Student Support Services a Semester Interpreter Request (SIR) form.

To ensure uninterrupted interpreting services, please notify Student Support Services of any changes (drop, add, change of meeting time, place, or section number) as soon as possible. The Semester Interpreter Request (SIR) form should be turned in the week of early registration (Phase 1) for all continuing students and during orientation for all new students.


Interpreting services for student activities other than classes may be requested by completing an Extra Interpreting Request (EIR) form , which is available at Student Support Services.  Request should be made at last 48 hours before services are needed.  Last minute requests will be accepted, and all attempts will be made to provide services. Services may be requested by submitting an Extra Interpreting Request Form by calling Student Support Services: Cartersville 678-872-8004; Douglasville and Floyd 706-368-7536; Marietta 678-915-5021; Paulding 678-946-1029.

Should you need the services of an interpreter in a testing situation outside the classroom (in the professor’s office, club meetings, or during the final exam period) an Extra Interpreting Request form should be completed and submitted at least 48 hours in advance.


Students should register for classes during the Early Registration Period in Student Support Services.  If the scheduled Early Registration Period is not convenient, please see a Disability Support Provider to schedule a time that is convenient.  Your learning style, communication needs, degree seeking, past performance, and interpreter scheduling will all be taken into consideration when planning course schedules for the next term.


Interpreters should be cancelled 24 hours in advance of the scheduled assignment.  If no cancellation is made and the interpreter reports to the assignment, this will be considered a “no show.”  Canceling interpreters less than 30 minutes before class/event will also be considered a “no show.”  Three consecutive “no shows” for the same assignment will result in a suspension of interpreting services and a meeting with a Disability Support Provider.


Interpreters will wait fifteen (15) minutes from the listed start time of the class for a student who may be running late.  If the student has not arrived after the 15 minute grace period, the interpreter will notify Student Support Services, informing the office of the “no show” and then leave.  Students are requested to inform the office if they are running late.  This will allow the office to notify the interpreter to wait outside the classroom until the student arrives.


Should your class be temporarily or permanently reassigned to another meeting location, please notify Student Support Services as soon as possible. Other changes, such as change in meeting time or instructor, should also be reported to Student Support Services. This will assist us in efficiently coordinating services.


Please report any difficulty or inconsistencies in services as soon as they occur.  Students will have the opportunity to fill out evaluations of interpreters at least once a semester.


By signing this release form, the student gives Student Support Services staff members permission to discuss/share information regarding any and all scheduling matters on a need-to-know basis. Should the student wish to retract permission for information to be shared, a meeting with a Disability Support Provider is required.
