Outdoor Classroom Grant
GHC Teams with Partners to Create Community Garden
Georgia Highlands College, Berry College, Rome City Schools and the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation have joined a cooperative venture to create an outdoor garden classroom for elementary schools and the South Rome community.
The curriculum for the outdoor classroom is currently being developed by the educational partners. Its framework will provide a hands-on learning experience for elementary students to learn about food politics, agriculture, human health and environmental awareness. The elementary students will share their harvest from the outdoor classroom with area non-profits that serve the southeast Rome community.
The classroom is not just for the elementary student. Local residents may also benefit from the outdoor classroom. Berry College is currently lending their expertise and support to the surrounding community garden, and will advise gardeners on planting schedules, soil amendment, fertilization and general garden maintenance.
