Fall Baseball Scrimmage
Fall Baseball Season Features Scrimmages against Four-Year Institutions
Charger baseball fans will have an opportunity to see the team scrimmage against Shorter University on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. at Shorter’s field in Rome as part of the fall season pre-conference play. Shorter has invited the Chargers to be part of its Scouts Day, when scouting representatives from a number of Major League Baseball clubs will be observing the players.
Head coach Mike Marra said all the scrimmages are extremely beneficial to the team for several reasons. “When we play other four-year institutions, our players get the exposure to Division I and II coaches, and those coaches get a chance to see and evaluate the skills of our team members. When the time comes to transfer to a four-year institution, our guys who are already on the radar might get picked up at one of these colleges or universities. Besides that, we have the opportunity to play with very high-caliber athletes. It’s just a great experience for the team, and it helps them improve their skills before the spring season.”
The Charger team recently attracted the attention of several scouts at a scrimmage against Darton College, and their notice prompted the invitation from Shorter, where more scouts will be on hand, including Tim Osbourne, who oversees the Major League Baseball scouting program.
Shorter is a provisional member of the Gulf South Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletics Association Division II. The Hawks ended last season with an overall record of 17-35 and a conference record of 10-15.
